I’ve just finished the 11th book in the Sgt. Windflower series. Sgt. Winston Windflower, a Cree from northern Alberta, is an RCMP officer stationed in Grand Bank, Newfoundland.
It’s is like a homecoming to read each book. I feel like I’ve got to know the area of Newfoundland where he is stationed and really enjoy following the family of Winston, Sheila, the girls Amelia and Stella, Lady the dog, and Molly the cat. As in other close knit communities the other characters in the books are so important to the story lines. There is Eddy Tizzard, Uncle Frank, Doc, Herb, Bill Ford, and so many more. And then there are the locations of Mug Up, Goobies, the detachment office, the T and the highway.
You can certainly read these books as stand alone stories but it is so much better to read them in order to follow all the real life drama and feel part of it.
Buried Secrets is set in 2021 just as restrictions are being lifted from the Covid pandemic in Canada. It is so relevant to what is going on in today’s world from the pandemic, to the drug wars, to the situation in the RCMP, to the missing girls and the sex trade.
Sgt. Windflower returns to Grand Bank, after a time in St. John’s, to help solve the murders of two people, one in the RCMP and another a reverend at the local church. More complications arise as others are involved, more deaths that are probably linked to the first two, and more details of a once missing girl who has been abused.
Winston continues to have dreams throughout the story and he seeks the help of Uncle Frank to help work his way through them and come to his decision.
Winston has already announced a very important decision about a move to Marystown. The ending of this book has another very important announcement by Winston and Sheila and we are left wondering what will be the next installment of their lives.
Enjoy getting acquainted or reacquainted with Windflower and his family, good food and friends, beautiful Newfoundland, and see if you can solve the connections and murders in Buried Secrets.
I had recently crocheted a new bookmark and got to use it for the first time with this book. Check out some of my homemade bookmarkers.
