This cute little sparrow is a year round visitor to the garden. It is a smaller sparrow, about 13 cm. long, easily identified by the reddy brown cap and the black eye stripe.

The wing markings are similar to those of other sparrows.

The chipping sparrow is mainly a ground feeder but does visit our flat feeder and gazebo feeder for the mixed seed.

The suet feeder attracts the chipping sparrow in winter.

Nests are usually built in mid sized shrubs up to 3 meters off the ground. The female is the nest builder while the male guards.
