Christmas: For the Bird Lover

posted in: Birds, Christmas | 0

I realize that November has just recently started but it is a fantastic time to start assembling your Christmas gifts.

This is a quick and easy gift to make for the bird watcher that you know. It doesn’t matter if the person is an experienced birder or a brand new one, this gift will bring hours of enjoyment.

  • a mason jar or any jar with a lid
  • small amounts of nyger, safflower, mixed seed, peanuts
  • material to cover jar lid
  • raffia
  • empty wire suet feeder
  • block of homemade suet

Into the mason jar layer different types of bird food … sunflower seeds, safflower, peanuts in the shell, hulled peanuts, and premium bird seed.  Cut a circle of material cover over the jar lid and tie with raffia or ribbon.  I went with the natural look and used beige material and raffia. Paper would also work too.

Recently when I made up some all season suet I made some in block shapes that fit the wire basket feeders.  The wire basket feeders can be purchased in stores with bird departments in them.

Print the recipe on photo paper so that it will be more sturdy and last longer, fasten it to the feeder basket.

It isn’t an expensive gift but one put together with the recipient in mind.  I know I would love to receive this sort of gift. You could also add an empty small bird feeder to the gift.

I got this idea after making my gift jars of bean soup.  The jars come from Classico spaghetti sauce and I save them for all sorts of uses.

Be sure to save the recipe card image to your computer, and then choose the correct printer settings.  I used glossy 4×6 photo size paper, and scale to fit the paper.

I’m sure the bird watcher on your gift list who would appreciate a gift like this.
